The name Blythewood Landscape is rooted in history and a deep connection to the land. It was inspired by Blythewood Farms, a historic property located in the heart of Westphalia, Maryland. Blythewood Farms is a site that holds both personal and community significance, and it is where our story began.
The name Blythewood itself comes from the word “Blythe,” meaning pleasant or carefree, and “wood,” referring to the wooded areas that surround the land. It’s a fitting name, as the farm has always been a place of natural beauty and peaceful refuge. The historic home on the property, which predates the American Revolution, has been a focal point for our work, serving as both inspiration and a reminder of the importance of conservation and preservation.
As the owner of Blythewood Landscape Management, I chose to name the company after the farm to honor the legacy of its natural beauty and the values of sustainability that we strive to uphold. Just as Blythewood Farms has been preserved and nurtured over the years, Blythewood Landscape is committed to enhancing and preserving the landscapes of our clients. The name reflects our dedication to restoring and maintaining the environment, ensuring that each property we work on is as enduring and well-loved as the historic grounds of Blythewood Farms.
A key element of our work at Blythewood Landscape is our commitment to volunteerism, particularly through our youth programs. Every year, we invite local youth, including baseball players from nearby organizations, to join us in hands-on volunteer projects. These young people play an essential role in helping maintain the landscapes of Blythewood Farms, from mulching gardens to preserving the natural beauty of the grounds. Not only do they contribute to the community, but they also gain valuable skills and a deeper appreciation for the environment.
Through this connection to Blythewood Farms, we are reminded of our mission every day: to create and maintain landscapes that are beautiful, sustainable, and meaningful for generations to come. The dedication of our youth volunteers further strengthens this commitment, showing that the future of conservation is in capable hands.
Preserve – maintain (something) in its original or existing state
Conserve – protect (something, especially an environmentally or culturally important place or thing) from harm or destruction
Sustain – strengthen or support physically or mentally
Blythewood Farms is not only the home Blythewood Landscape Management. It is a non-profit, volunteer organization serving the community of Westphalia and P.G. County. Its mission is to preserve, conserve and sustain the historic Blythewood Farm, just as our landscape branch does with the properties of each customer. The focal area of the farm is the historic home, which has been sustained and restored through volunteer efforts.
After all the landscaping was completed, sweatshirts were given out to the Bowie Baseball team, whose coaches include our very own Bernie Granzow and Mike Berg. The players and crew took many pictures together throughout the day. A delicious cookout followed to feed the baseball players, their parents and Blythewood crew. The night ended with a large bonfire to keep everyone warm during the cool spring night.
In 2018 and 2019, baseball players from the Bowie Boys and Girls club volunteered to join forces with Blythewood Landscape Management to help mulch the landscape and gardens of the historic home at Blythewood Farms. Players spent quality time together off of the field and worked to mulch all the areas of the home. They were able to learn new tips and tricks about preserving a landscape and all of the plant life it contains.
If you read our story, you’ll know that we care greatly about the environment and our clients share the same values. We live and practice these attributes with every landscape project we maintain as well as with our local organizations such as the Bowie Boys and Girls Club. We look forward to our next gathering where we can Preserve, Conserve and Sustain as a community, by creating healthy landscapes and lasting memories.
